PHOTOVOLTAICS GLOSSARY

Photovoltaic cell

A device converting solar energy into electricity.

Photovoltaic effect

Phenomenon in which photons (light) are converted into electrons (electric current)

Molecule

An arrangement of atoms characterized by a chemical formula and corresponding to a small mass of matter.

Polymer

Very long chain (macromolecule) composed of the same repeating link, or monomer.

Enduction

Manufacturing process consisting in coating the surface of a support, e.g. textile, with a material designed to impart specific characteristics to this support.

Encapsulation

Process consisting in enclosing components and electrical circuits within a material in order to protect them.

Climatic chamber

Device used for the simulation of specific environmental conditions, in particular temperature and relative humidity.

Silicon

A very abundant chemical element, the main component of glass, present in many compounds such as silica (sand) and silicates (kaolin).
